brief history
Minot’s cherished zoo began modestly on April 9, 1914, as Riverside Park Zoo, starting with just 24 animals—12 fox squirrels and 12 gray squirrels.
In 1920, the zoo acquired its first large mammal, a male American bison. The following year, it built its first permanent structure, the Zoological Building, which still stands today and serves as the zoo’s aviary.
Riverside Park was renamed Roosevelt Park in 1922, in honor of former President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt Park and Roosevelt Park Zoo became independent entities in 1970.
From its humble beginnings to today, the zoo has seen remarkable transformations. Read the full history by clicking here.
